Let's ride down the river of free imagination. Let's get surprised,
and fill our heads full of wonder and awe. Play, play, play!

Allow the shiny happy things in life to shimmer and shine their way into your heart. Watch and run through the sparkles and rainbows that scatter in all directions from this 'Universal Tree Of Life.' This is just like the Queen's own room of natural rainbows, gotten from stringing all manner of crystals in every window. The sun and earth together can make magic happen! So can you! Feel your lightness!

Yes just let your mind go. Be free to think silly thoughts and smile loudly! Now how often do you see a nest full of people? We are in a wonderland of ideas made manifest. We are happy like wax lips!

Yes, there are real peeps in that nest.

Where in the mad hatters world are we my dear? We are at the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore Hon! There are no rules here...no boxes...and no formally trained artists.

Since they don't allow cameras inside the buildings my photos are taken in their outside spaces, which happen to have a few funtastical sculptures that I can share with you. I do wish I could have shown you the beautiful blue bottle covered hearse in the Jim Rouse Visionary Building. Elvis would have adored it!

Feast your eyes on this eight foot mosaic egg! The Queen loves eggs... and sparkly things...so I really wish for this sculpture to be in my castle! I just want to hug it! Gorgeous from every angle and when the sunbeams hit it look out! The mosaic design is based on the photos taken with the Hubble Telescope of our beautiful galaxy.

The museum sits next to Federal Hill where crowds come to watch movies on this wall with the giant hand over the big movie screen. Imagine that the hand is going to reach down and pluck someone right out of a movie scene. Bwah-hahahaha

It's time to go and see the crazy funkyfide art that lives inside The American Visionary Art Museum. Oh there is that egg again! Can't get enough of it! Speaking of Galaxies, the show inside AVAM right now is called 'All Things Round - Galaxies, Eyeballs, and Karma!' You have to visit the AVAM website as it is a wonderment in itself, plus you will get a peek at some of the things going on in the museum.

After going through all the levels of the museum we were hungry! So we went to 'Mr. Rain's Fun House' for lunch located on the top floor of the museum. Since it was a very warm October day we decided to eat outside on the patio over looking Federal Hill and the giant whirligig kinetic sculpture that constantly spins and moves in the breeze.

Oh My! The food is just as fantastic as the exhibitions of AVAM! Let's eat! While we waited our server brought us some soft pretzel bites and honey mustard. This Philly girl was extra happy when they brought us a second round of these fun little delights!

Wowie Zowie the food here was soooooo good! This is no museum cafe folks, 'Mr Rain's Fun House' is a really awesome restaurant!
Our first course was Butternut Squash Soup. Mmmm a fall favorite!

Then came one the best sandwiches I have ever eaten! I am getting hungry just looking at this salmon fillet sandwich again! Look at that bread all full of holes. So good!

Ben had an Asian salad and veggie sandwich combo.

Of course the art work does not stop at the restaurant door. They have big funky bottle cap n' pearled animal-like heads hanging out on the walls of the patio Fun House for your viewing pleasure.

Ben and I usually share a dessert and this was a yummy work of art!

As we stare deeply into all the mosaic walls covering the AVAM's exterior walls, we think we are so glad to have taken this trip through time and space and arrived at such a place of artistic freedom. I may love the 'old masters,' but I also know when it's time to indulge my inner child! This museum is the perfect outlet for a zany zippy toothy grin-fest! You certainly will remember the pieces of art that immediately made you say, "How cool is that!"

If you are ever in Baltimore a trip to AVAM funky fun town should be a priority. The museum is filled with all kinds of inventive pieces from tramp art to phantasmagorical paintings. It is located between the Inner Harbor and the Federal Hill area at 800 Key Highway. There is also a fun spirited museum shop called Sideshow that will keep you busy looking at all the loony and kitschy gifts.

Just watch that Egg... there may be other worldly beings transporting through this galaxy gateway to check out the joint during your visit!

Reclaiming My Health : Part One "The Unknown"

Writing about my own medical issues and personal situations is subject matter I did not plan on speaking about on this blog. Since now I have a positive outcome, I feel I can share with others my own life lessons on how to handle chronic medical issues. It is my hope that this series may be of use to someone. I will break the subject matter into parts and post in between my other blog posts.

First let me say that I am grateful for my current good health, and
I do not put what I have gone through in any way equal to the life changing situation that a friend of ours endures, which is the result of brain surgery due to a ruptured aneurysm. My own journey may have been difficult, and even still have it's ups and downs, but
I always try to remember that no matter your situation in life, someone else is having a more difficult time. I try to be grateful
for what I can do in life, even when it has only been breathing.

My reemergence into feeling healthy took about three years to materialize. Now the light has begun to be visible in my life once again, and even to others. I feel I have regained the strength to look back on some dark days and pull out the lessons. We never lost hope, but there were times it seemed like it was going to become "the never ending story of medical world." For two and a half years I had medical appointments every single week. I am not kidding about that fact at all. That was our reality. I had to keep a chart of where to be and what medication to be taking. Quite a boring subject to talk about to someone when they ask casually "how you are doing?"
For a long time I said nothing to anyone. Who wants to hear about this stuff? When I did not attend my husbands events, he would just say that I did not feel well. Perhaps interpreted as if I had a passing cold. Ben certainly did not want to go into details about our current lifestyle of constant doctor visits and procedures. After awhile
I realized people may be thinking that I am not attending Ben's gigs because I am disinterested. Not so. The truth is I could not walk across my own living room. Running my organs and just breathing was all my body could handle. Well thank goodness for that!

I have no insurance and have for years avoided medical visits completely unless it was my last resort. I might call a doctor friend once a year to get a prescription. My physical life radically changed shortly after I got married to the soul mate that I had been waiting for all my life. I thought, "this is not happening during my happily ever after!" Well It was happening, and I cannot deny how it took over our lives. Eventually after you have spent every night lying in bed vibrating like an old lawn mower, and hoping your are not having a heart attack, you change your mind about contacting a doctor.
If you really want to live...you have to call on someone to help you. What happened then is a story to be told in a later series post.

The frustrations of things not getting any better, then more body systems going out of whack would be overwhelming. All one could do was take it one day at a time...for real. I often wondered if it would all ever stop and I could one day again live my life as I had envisioned. I saw myself as a healthy vibrant woman enjoying her loved ones as well as having something to contribute to the world.
So I would chant to myself over and over, "I am not my body...
I am not my body...I am spirit having a human experience"

I also needed to recognize while I live in this world, I did have a body, and I would have to deal with my broken systems. I just could not get lost in the body issues or the mental game of ever feeling sorry for myself. One of the hardest lessons I had to learn was just letting other people do things for me. After all I was the eldest child and mother figure to five siblings, a single working mom to my own children, and eventually was a woman who started her own business. I was tough and could do it all myself. Being unable to clean my house, work in the garden, and take care of other normal everyday chores was downright weird. I was too young to feel like ninety! Truth is I did feel that old, and I kept asking "why?" Where did the "me" that I knew and loved go? Why doesn't it stop? Why are more things getting added to my list of things wrong with my body? When will this end...if ever? Year after year. I was supposed to be better by now.

I lived on our sofa for months at a time and stared at the world passing me by. When we would leave for a doctor or lab appointment. My husband had to hold onto me, and carefully walk me down the few steps to the car. I shuffled along to wherever I needed to be hoping someone would give me good news. It just got to be more of the same...just a different day. Really? When will this stop happening? What do I need to do? How can I approach this differently? Is this my new life? How can I get the most out of where I am at now? My medical issues had combined into a cocktail that put my body systems out of balance. One by one they would need to be addressed to lighten the load on my messed up vehicle. I will write about what my personal medical issues are in future posts. Right now I want to speak to that feeling of frustration with the unknown. You cannot live in fear of anything. You must understand the Universe loves you and remind yourself of this fact often. Yes you will whimper and cry, and yes you will get sad about your situation. You cannot live that everyday though. You must look for the good. My blessing is having a husband who is like no other man I have known. No one else in my life would have taken care of me the way this man has done. Thank goodness I am with him at this time in my life!

After listening to friends speak about the various health concerns that start to creep up on us at our age, I found that many take their doctor's word about everything and do not think to question this authority figure. Since I was over-run with a plethora of ailments
and had to see numerous medical personnel I can say 60% of those medical personnel or systems I encountered made mistakes. Those mistakes affected my quality of life every time. So it is with a strong recommendation that my first "tip" is to keep a personal medical log book of all lab tests, including your own records of blood pressure and weight from any doctor visit. You need to know your own history and body. This also gives you the real information from which to look up what everything means on the internet. You become better informed and ask important questions of your doctors. So please start keeping a medical log notebook now if you have any medical concerns with your health. Get a notebook and a three hole punch. Put section tabs for your basic info such as weight and blood pressure readings,
a section for those papers that come from the pharmacy explaining your prescriptions, another section for lab tests, notes, and a section for the medical bills as well. Your doctors will be happy you did this as it helps them be current with your information. Bring it to every doctor and lab visit. You will have a clear record to catch and correct mistakes. I will talk about those errors in another post.

During your personal trials of life just try to be grateful for anything positive you can find, and concentrate on those things, however little. The mind is a powerful tool and will multiply what you think about, and manifest it in your life. This is because the Universe reflects your thoughts. So I kept visualizing perfect health.

While unable to walk around and participate in my own life, I still could sit and watch my grand daughter playing and growing before my eyes. That is a treasure. So while you are in the thick of it, just keep the light near and remember who you really are.

Attack Of The Santas! and Snowmen! and Elves!

It was a dark and chilly night like any other night in this small country town. I was sitting at a teensy-tiney table at a cozy little bar on the east side of town, watching my hubby play acoustic guitar. Suddenly a large band of ruffians entered the room hooting and hollering. They were pushing forward and filling the small bar in all directions including the outside porch. Dressed in red Santa suits, Santa dresses, Santa mini-skirts. elf gear, Santa hats, and glowing lights, the space filled fast. There was even a giant abominable snowman!

Accompanied by a pair of polite Marines carrying a donation bucket, this sudden invasion was the 3rd annual Santa Pub crawl organized to raise money for the 'Toys For Tots' program in our area.

Ben continued to play classic rock tunes rallying the crowd into sing-a-longs! They gladly participated, singing and dancing with their merry little selves...or elves. Song requests were made and played. The donation bucket was passed around in the ensuing frenzy.
"Santa Is In The Building!" a large Elvis Santa exclaimed! And so he was, and quite a jolly ole' fellow. Since I only had my teensy-tiny phone camera with me this past weekend, I did my best to capture the magnitude of the massive Santa attack on this venue. The Santa people just kept streaming into the bar. It was red Chaos! So how often do you see "Frosty" drinking a beer? Or Santa? Or a gaggle of Santa's drinking for that matter?

Unfortunately the Queen had to quickly vacate her teensy-tiny table due to a flock of young chickies who started to fill the Queens table with their drinks as if the Queen was not present. They were so busy squawking, texting, and taking photos of each other, they were obviously unaware of their rudeness. The Queen's Guardian Angels whispered to "get out now!" "Something is going to happen!" I quickly scooped up my belongings from the table and shoved them into my precious fairy bag. As I stood and turned to leave the area, the foreign drinks on my table began falling over and spilling in all directions. I was thankful I heeded the message to vacate the area, other wise my notepad, me, and my bag would be a sticky wet mess.

Then the rude girls who caused this minor incident, turned their backs, and ignored my requests to pass, so that I could go sit by my hubby up front. Since I have encountered this behavior in other venues with young women before, I wonder if parents teach their children kindness and consideration anymore. Not the first time my dining table in a club has been used as a trash bin for young adults drinks. I say get your nose out of your phone, come down from your "me, me, me cloud" and notice what's actually happening around you, in the now, little teensy-tiny girls! I also notice they will often ignore each other, to text someone else, that they are having a wonderful time...doing what?....texting?

Eventually the Queen was able to take refuge from the claustrophobic red velvet crowd on a bench near the hubby. Safe from the invasion at last! No it is not the first time I had to save myself from over zealous young people. Once a girl decided to do a cheer-leading flip onto some guy and kicked me in the side. Never a dull moment on the road! Even on a teensy-tiny one!

The crowd was having a great time singing with Ben and that was fun to watch. Even the owner was dancing with the Santa girls. He then thanked Ben for doing a great job of uplifting the crowd, and making great music for everyone to enjoy. The long line of Santa's trailed out and into their yellow school bus, a bit happier than when they came to this bar...and the Queen let out a teeny-tiny sigh of relief.
Ho! Ho! Ho!

A New Baby To Love!

Welcome Liam Patrick! It's been a whirlwind of a week! This little guy came a few days earlier than my daughter expected and everyone was scrambling to take care of baby biz. Liam weighed 9 pounds, just like his big sister Aowyn! He is officially the family's Christmas present this year! How cool is that!!!???!!!

When Aowyn first saw her little brother Liam she exclaimed "Baby!" The following day when Aowyn saw him she said, "Another Baby!"
Of course Grandpa is thrilled to be experiencing a little boy too.

Aowyn was so gentle and just wanted to constantly pet Liam's little head. She spontaneously and gently kissed his forehead too. At two and a half Aowyn still has to learn not to lean her weight on him, and to be calm and careful. Tapping on Liam's clear bassinet in the hospital and calling out to him was a fun game for our girl!

When Liam would make any crying sounds Aowyn would say, "You okay Baby?" "It's alright baby." Then she would look around and make sure the adults were noticing the baby needed something.

Our little guy Liam is so alert and constantly looking around, even though we know his vision is limited to up close faces. Which is why

While my daughter and Aowyn's daddy stayed at the hospital with their new baby. Aowyn stayed with us. Grandpa and Grandmum got
full days and nights of Aowynisms and her non-stop energy. Watching Grandpa read her bedtime stories was so precious! Took me back to when I read books every-night to my two babies. Good times.

I hope your holidays are filled with good surprises and awesome presents! We are feeling thankful and blessed that everyone is doing so well. Life is good at the Castle. It's easy to see why Grandmum and Grandpa will be having more years of adventures in toddler land!

A Rustic Family Tradition

For the past couple of years we have been attending an old fashioned celebration of Thanksgiving in a cabin. The charm of this situation totally suits the gathering of friends and family associated with the Thanksgiving holiday. The beautiful drive in the country to get to the secluded location is down long winding roads, past old farms, and through small towns. We feel grateful and fortunate to have been invited to share in this unique tradition created by the generous family of one of Ben's relatives. I just love this cabin, and the love that goes into making this communal event something special for

so many people! Truly a day of thanks and giving.

The feeling of warmth you get from this old camp located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains is absolute perfection. A central stone fireplace with a hearth on both sides, fills the room with heat and a relaxing place to sit and enjoy being in an old rocker. Certainly a great place to catch up with the relatives and warm our toes.

It is a large and friendly group that comes together to share the great outdoors and the cozy cabin atmosphere. There were about 37 people sharing Thanksgiving together in this space. The only thing that would make it more perfect for me, is to have my children drive out one year and share in this experience. Not to worry though, I did visit with my babies after Ben and my glorious afternoon in the country.

It is my guess that this private fishing and hunting club has been in existence since the late 1800's. The rustic main cabin is filled with the kind of old memorabilia you would expect to see in such a time honored place. It is living breathing vintage that's still being used to it's fullest potential today. Surely that is the way it should be.

The cabin sits on the edge of a large creek that after three days of rain had over run its banks. The water was just feet from the cabin and caused road closures in the area just one day before Thanksgiving. Lucky for us that rushing water receded, and we had
a warm, sunny, and wonderful autumn day. Everybody was happy,
and all was right with the world. You can feel the goodness in those moments and be grateful. Being in nature gives you a chance to meditate on those thoughts in the ultimate peaceful surroundings.

There are many old group photos of the members of the club from over the years on the cabin walls. Old fashioned scenes of camping, and men standing in front of the very same cabin wearing the patina of time. This camp is still used by it's members all year long, weather permitting. The main cabin and surrounding land reminds you of a time when there was no television, people enjoyed the outdoors, each others company, and reading. How refreshing not to be assaulted by football and obnoxious commercials, and live the true spirit of Thanksgiving... Family, friends and great food.

Sitting on this stunning property is an expansive field next to a pond, just right for the sporty types to get their game on for real. For those who would like to relax while they enjoy nature there are many weathered picnic tables in the shade of various venerable old trees.

Families that are associated with this club have had their private cabins for generations. It's a fantastic tradition of sharing with your family and friends something other than a TV screen and a hand held device. You have to love that these days! Needless to say there is no need to replace that authentically aged sign either.

Everywhere I turn I find treasures and time worn items. Even the
new addition to the cabin porch is done with that natural cabin style. But something was missing... Off I went looking for the old dinner bell that used to sit where this railing is today. I found that the old iron bell was currently resting on the ground beyond the porch.

You can see the creek runs right along side of the cabin. Pretty cool! So picturesque! Oh I was talking about the hubby! Well I think it's time to get back inside and see whats cooking! Hmmm I could have sworn that clock said ten of two before we walked outside... Most fishing and hunting cabins have their fair share of the ubiquitous stuffed animals on the walls, and this old place is no different.
Saw a moose...saw a moose...did he do the fandango?

All the family members and guests bring a dish to contribute to the bounty of the many overflowing Thanksgiving bowls and platters that are set out on a table on the far side of the fireplace. The dessert table is up front by the entrance, I suppose so you can make a quick escape with your pumpkin muffin! Two very long wooden tables flank the room with rows of comfortably worn old wooden chairs on each side. I can smell ye olde' Turkey. So it's time to choose our seats, hold hands for a few kind words, and say grace.

Dinner was delicious, and I did a fair job of not overdoing it this year. Even with all the yummy dessert temptations, I only had a teaspoon taste each, of a pumpkin casserole, and an apple bake. Outside the sun is getting low on the creeks freshly made mud flats, and the girls are counting raffle tickets on the porch steps. I think we need to walk off dinner and stare into the calming effect of nature.

You can certainly see why I took so many pictures at this charming little camp. As I look at this photo of these branches from the woods next to me, something about it reminds me of the old John Lennon 'Imagine' album cover. Cool.... and hey, dig that 'Wizard of Oz' fighting tree with it's gnarled arms just below!

Our drive home during sunset was lovely and I was snapping photos out the car window! Silly me, a bit obsessed. I wish my eyes were a camera! Anyway, now we were off to round two of turkey time at my daughters home. My son was visiting and that is a rare treat! Oh, and I can't believe I had more to eat, but it was so gosh darn good!

The REMaking of the Ben Sherman Guitar Website

The new and improved Ben Sherman Guitar website just went live!
It has been in the works for over a year. I started my page designs in January, and then in March my health once again took a nose dive. I did not have the energy to work on this huge project until this October. So lately every moment we have had to sit side by side late into the wee vampire hours of our day, my hubby and I were cranking out each page and working out the bugs.

As an artist I have to admit the inspiration for the makeover of the BSG website is due to two talented men. The first is my loving husband, and my artistic Muse, Ben Sherman. Playing classical guitar, acoustic guitar, electric classic rock, jazz fusion, teaching and writing a book, his talent is awesome. I never tire of all the various ways I can showcase my Ben with my own artistic vision, whether it is by taking photographs at gigs, videoing him in a band, designing promo and merchandise, or creating artwork featuring the Shermanator! So of course he deserved my very best effort when creating a website to promote his outstanding musical endeavors. Unfortunately he had to wait out my health issues for most of the year. Actually the delay made me revisit some of my early designs and make some revisions. Artists are never satisfied.

I wanted to create for Ben a platform that expresses his commitment to excellence with a richly textured website full of images that would be a visual treat to the viewer. So the second man who inspired the overall look of the website is Jerry Jones of Shadowhouse Creations, someone I have never met. Jerry's texture collection constantly wows me, and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase what can be done with his textures. Additionally Jerry's personal digital art gallery is stunning, and even Jerry's personal artwork certainly influenced two of the digital art pieces I added to Ben's new photo gallery. You can see one I created at the top of this post. I truly hope you visit the Shadowhouse Creations gallery so you can enjoy Jerry's intriguing artistic world.

Some of my website background designs for BSG were created using various Shadowhouse textures and then using Photoshop blend modes multiple times. Other textures were used just as Jerry created them, as I felt they were totally captivating just as they were made. Amazingly Jerry is a generous soul who gives you the use of his textures freely, as long as you use them in your artwork, do not sell them, or claim them as your own. Those of us who follow and respect Jerry are very protective of him ...so don't mess with his rules.

When Ben and I created his former BSG website in 2008 I was just struggling to learn digital design on the little Paint Shop Pro that came with the computer. I have learned so much since then about using Photoshop that I was very excited to dig into this website makeover. Ben actually does all the coding for the BSG website so
he is the one who makes the magic happen that I have in my head!
We truly are partners together and that is so cool. I guess you can tell Ben is my soul mate, and I am his number one fan. Although
Ben has some other long time music fans that would dispute that
fact with me! hah!

We added a beautiful new photo gallery and video gallery to the new website. In addition to gig photos, there are retro photos from Ben's musical past, (you know...the ones with the funny hair like below) as well as digital artwork I created for fun. (see the artwork at the bottom of this post) There are also newly released videos of Ben, including one I requested myself as I really wanted him to release the song called 'Cliffs Of Dover.' The Video was taken with Hectic Red during the 20th anniversary show. This is the same song he was playing on stage the night we re-met and I had said to myself,
"Oh yes he will be mine!" I just felt the connection to him immediately through his music. It is the stuff of dreams.

The reason I have not been posting very much is we have been working our butts off on the new BSG website... so I hope you will take the time to check it out! Let me know what you think!

Tedeschi Trucks At Hot August Blues

One August day we headed out with the family to "Hot August Blues" in Hunt Valley Maryland to see one of our favorite bands, the "Tedeschi-Trucks Band," featuring the fantabulos Susan Tedeschi and her husband Derek Trucks. Finally they have come together and formed a band with like minded souls! We wanted to take advantage of this opportunity to see them play together while they are out touring and promoting their new album 'Revelator.' Gone are the days when my daughter and I would be pressed against the stage in front of Susan when she came to Baltimore. Word has gotten out! Darn.

We were in the back of the crowd under a white tent on this Hot August Blues day. That is quite okay, because when you have a two year old with you, there has got to be room to move. Actually Aowyn would like to be on the move more than anyone would like! Grandpa got a workout. Sometimes it was just round and round the long blue row of port-o-pots! Then there was when she ran from my pregnant daughter into the crowd. Just like Forest Gump she is..."runnnang!"

I remember one of the first concerts that I attended with my hubby. It was after I told Ben that my daughter and myself had tickets to go see Susan and Derek, and I asked if would he like to go to the show as well. I was happy that Ben was enthusiastic about the show, as I was excited that Derek would also be sitting in with Susan on that evening. I love me some slide guitar! And since I had seen Derek play with the Allman Brothers band in Virginia, I can assure you, as a world class guitar player, Derek Trucks slide work is wicked good!

I think watching and listening to Derek up close that night had an influence on Ben's own slide work. Oh Yes! I so love when Ben uses the slide on acoustic and especially electric guitar. It sings!

Bands played the festival all day on two stages pumping out the jams. The crowd enjoyed the music, crafts and food vendors.

The act that went on just before "Tedeschi Trucks Band" was
"Robert Randolph and The Family Band."

A really enjoyable group with soulful sounding rock and great musicianship. Are they happy or what? I love that joyful expression!

Roberts pedal steel slide work was really exciting, and seemed effortless. Ben tells me this is quite a difficult instrument to play.

It was Sunday and the band invited people up on the stage for some 'go to meetin' dancing. People took them up on their offer!

Nightfall at Oregon Ridge and the "Tedeschi Trucks Band" begins to rock with soulful abandon. We are feeling it! The glow fills the crowd.

The main event filled the stage with talented powerful musicians!
We got those vibes where you cannot help but move, and our little Aowyn does her two year old moves to the beat too!

Susan can saaaaannnng! She speaks with a sweet delicate voice but when she sings a powerful force comes from her heart, filled with the truth of her soul. There are many great videos on this vevo site of the bands music. I could fill this page with them all! Instead here is a video of one of their songs they performed to give you an idea of what it sounded like to be in the presence of this awesome band!
You can also learn about all the other members of the band in their behind the scenes making of "Revelator" videos filmed at Susan and Dereks home studio. What a wonderful group of people. If you are a music lover you should also check out the Crossroads 2010 video for yourself! The band has some really great jams with Warren Haynes.

If you are not yet familiar with Derek Trucks...Dereks uncle was the drummer in the Allman Brothers Band, Butch Trucks. Derek grew up a part of the Allman Family of musicians and was influenced as a young child by the bands music. He was a prodigy at 9 and was opening for the Allman Brothers by 12 and of course playing with the best musicians in the world. You can read the Wikipedia about Derek here or just watch this video of Derek at age 12! This is the age when many young boys come to Ben to start guitar lessons. So I say,
"Hey young grasshopper.... here is some inspiration!"

This old 2007 video below of Susan Tedeschi reminds me of the times my daughter and I would go out to see Susan when she came to town. She could belt out one song, and be crying during the next ballad. Touching your emotions is what music is all about and Susan has the voice and heart that communicates easily. We just love her!

Combine that with the talent of her husband Derek and the members of the 'Tedeschi Trucks Band' band and you have the recipe for a perfect evening under the stars! Great weather and great music filled the air that night. Our family and the crowd went home very happy. Especially my daughter, as this day was our birthday present to her!

Tips For Painting Childrens Murals

My favorite murals to paint were always the ones for children. Whether you desire to create a mural for your own child, or would
like to do this as a career, there are a few tips included in this blog to help get you started. Think about it... don't you wish someone
had painted a mural in your room when you were young?

I loved the excitement a child would show about the unique artwork that was created just for their room. That is why I always included the child in my design questions when planning a mural for a children's room. If you are painting a mural for your own child you can certainly do this in your early planning stages and bounce around some ideas together. When you are planning professional murals it may depend on the client situation during your first meeting. Some people have a very difficult time visualizing anything and getting the child involved at this point confuses the parent even more. You have to feel out the situation, but when possible ask the child's opinion.

The age of a child can range from a baby to a teenager, so of course you would have a difficult time getting an infants opinion. haha! Most times the mother and the interior designer, often have a basic idea of what they want in the room. Many clients relied on my portfolio of past work for inspiration. Having a full portfolio of examples or bringing reference materials is very helpful. Do not leave your books overnight with the client unless you absolutely know you will be coming back to that home! I had to replace a few great reference books because of trusting new clients at first meetings.
I always treated the portfolio of my faux and mural artwork photos like gold! Only the inner sanctum of the designer I worked with ever got to keep that baby overnight!

To get good reference materials and ideas: The children's library
is a fantastic place to find large picture books for inspiration.
The newsstand section of a store like Barnes and Noble carries many interior design magazines that feature children's rooms and murals. Any kind of art or design trade publication can be an inspiration.
If you are going to do this as a career you must invest in all kinds of reference books on many kinds of subjects. Collect animal, architecture, nature, sports, and fairytale books. Get picture books like "The DK Children's Illustrated Dictionaries." Purchase books specific to showing mural examples which usually have how-to information in them as well. It is always best to have the theme around something the child has a passion about because they will
live with this artwork for many years.

Once the subject matter and the style has been determined for the mural then you can proceed with the very important step of 'prepping the room.' I always allowed a day just for purchasing supplies, taping out the room with the beautiful blue or green painters tape, removing items from the wall, repairing any holes, setting out the tarps and moving furniture. This way I could come in fresh the next day to begin painting and creating. Also be sure to ask the client where your clean up area will be. Sometimes they have a sink in the basement, and other times you have to bring your bucket of brush mess home sloshing in the car. Before I left each night, especially when there are children in the home, I cleaned up my work area very carefully. Water buckets are emptied, paint cans are closed tightly, paint and glaze tins are covered with aluminum foil. Then I would cover the entire area with a folded tarp to hide the contents from little eyes. Leave no temptations behind.

When I began painting the walls in a child's room I found the children were usually curious, liked to watch for awhile and ask many questions. That is a perfect time to find out what you can add into the mural to make it extra personal, and make them feel like they had input into the design. This could be as simple as the addition of their favorite bug, animal, their pet, putting their name on a banner or a locker door. Every situation is different.

As an artist I usually free-handed everything I painted right on the spot. I rarely did detailed sketches as it was all in my head, and I made sure I did a good job describing what I would do to my clients. If you are not so comfortable painting in that way you can prepare a preliminary drawing and then do a pencil sketch on the wall first. If you cannot draw at all you will need to get an overhead projector that will place your design on the wall for you to outline first.

If this is your first time painting on a wall pick a smaller sized mural and a simple design. Use small cans of water based house paint. Benjamin Moore is my favorite brand because it is so thick and creamy. They also have a glazing liquid to make your paint transparent when needed. Some people only use the small plastic squirt bottles of craft paint when doing a smaller mural. You can squirt the paint into small containers like those plastic cups you get to put ketchup in at fast food restaurants. Remember most importantly it is all just paint, so do not be afraid of it! If you do not like what you painted the first time. Lightly sand any thick edges you made, paint over it with your wall paint, and just start again.

Be sure to have a nice supply of good brushes and a bucket of water to start. Keep rags and paper towels handy for any drips. Buy a few sizes of real artist acrylic "filbert" style brushes from the art store, along with any detail brushes you may need. I used a plastic tool box with the handle in the middle to carry my brush collection. On one side was the brushes and the other side was various tools such as knives, scissors,tapes, rulers, measuring tape, laser levels, pencils, kneaded erasers, paint can opener, chalk, etc. You can tape any reference photos or tear sheets right up on the wall with painters tape, and move them around as you go. Have all the reference pages in books already tabbed and notated so you can find your place easily.

A child's room is a place for their imagination, their dreams, and a place to have fun! Be expressive in your painting! Be colorful! You can even paint on top of a stool or over the closet doors as I did for a sports locker room look. Also don't forget that special effects paints are perfect for children's rooms. You could use chalkboard paint for the area under the chair-rail, put day glow paint on the moon and stars so they shine in the night, and use glitter paint to make a castle and fairy sparkle! Now turn on some music and start painting!

Sesame Place: Toddler Hope And Tragedy, Then A Whole Lotta Philly Food

To celebrate Aowyn's 'only-child-ness' before she becomes a big sister in a few months, we planned a trip to Sesame Place in Pennsylvania. Loving Abby and Elmo, we felt this park would be perfect for her.

Well...things don't always go as one would imagine. So it's a good rule to just go with the flow, however difficult or disappointing at the time. As a grandmother I was so looking forward to our two day trip to Sesame Place. To start out we had to get up at 6 am which does not go well for night owls. We managed to be ready and in our daughters vehicle on time. Ben caught up on some sleep during the long three and half hour drive. Not me. I cannot sleep in cars.
Try as I might the night before to go to sleep early, my body would not cooperate. I sustained on four hours sleep. I had a pillow with me... just in case. It is a tight fit next to the baby seat and my old aching body shifted often and then my breakfast sandwich fell between the seats. Not a good omen for the day.

It was good we had ordered our tickets and VIP parking passes online. This moves you along quicker when you arrive at Sesame Place.
The VIP parking was an excellent choice as we parked right next to the entrance. This really helped my pregnant daughter and well...me! You can get your hand stamped and go out to the car during the day for supplies too. Other people had to park so far away! We were very glad we had paid the extra money for this parking area!

I remembered Sesame Place as an amusement park for toddlers.
My children and I went shortly after the park was opened over 26 years ago. Yes things have changed....a lot!

There were no huge crowds and all the rides and play areas built at the time were easily accessible. Here are a couple old photos from 1985 of me and my two little ones. Now that little girl is taking her little girl to Sesame Place. Oh there's my eighties frosted perm.

The lack of people in these old pics is very evident and you can even see the Sheraton hotel in the background of one. Now there are so many big water rides that the view in the park is quite different.

Sesame Place has grown into a large water park with wall to wall big people in bathing suits and towels. Saturday was hot, steamy and uncomfortable. Just moving through the vast sea of people and strollers was overwhelming. It seemed all my energy was in finding shade and just breathing. Ben and I tried going into a few of the food areas for some air-conditioned shade, but there was not one empty table in any of them. People kept pouring in from every direction.
The lines were long for everything and that is not fun for toddlers or big peeps. We pressed on.

Aowyn is not known for her patience, and could not understand at two and half years old, the concept of waiting in long wrap-around lines to get on a ride. Cutting the line off right in front of her was cause for sad loud wailing sounds. Not the gooey wonderment we had all hoped for in our imagining this day we planned around her.

Finally on the carousel ride, she was in baby heaven. Then it stopped. She did not understand having to get off of a ride either. So ended her short moment of glory. More tears.

Luckily Aowyn really enjoyed this soft blocks area the best of all.

She could run round and round the big circle while interacting with other children. Occasionally she would escape to the next play area that had a colorful twisted slide and then jump in an old fashioned puddle on the sidewalk. I was really hoping there would be more safe creative play areas like this one just for toddlers.

Sitting on the carpeted steps we all felt this shady play area was a good spot for a relaxing break. I closed my eyes a few minutes while leaning on Ben, and then ate some tiny picnic sandwiches my daughter had made for such a moment. I felt refreshed.

Next we headed to one of the indoor shows featuring Elmo. This show was based on the 'Elmo's World' TV show and dancing. The wait in line was long, and many people butted in front of us, as our place in line was just in front of the door to the venue. I also felt the attendants could have moved us inside the small theater much sooner. Once inside my daughter spotted the best seats in the house. Up on the top row next to the exit. These seats had a Plexiglas wall in front of them allowing Aowyn to stand up and not bother anyone around her. Much better than being squished in the bleachers below.

Everyone was instructed to move down to the end of their benches to make room for all the people coming in. We were fine, but we spied a woman who refused to move from her seat near the aisle and then left a blank spot of three to four available seats. It was funny, because from above you could see she would have had twice as much room if she moved down the bench. An extremely large man was behind her and had her locked into a very uncomfortable position. Some people are just difficult, and that led to the last four people entering the theater being jammed into the row behind us.

Rules for the crowd were repeated over and over at the beginning of the show, and then finally... Elmo appeared, all red and furry.
We were not sure how Aowyn would react to seeing him. It was disbelief, surprise, and awe. She kept holding her hand over her mouth as she stared down at him. Silence.

The show was enjoyable for her and was not too long. We quickly exited afterward and tried to make a game plan for the rest of the day. We decided to walk around the park and scope things out for
the next day's activities. Of course we were hoping there would not be as many people on a Sunday.

It seemed like the park had gotten even more crowded towards the evening. Attempts to get in line for rides were becoming impossible as the lines were just too long. Navigating the masses was really not much fun and now everyone was getting tired. Even the crowds were looking grumpy. Not those happy photos you see on the website.

Aowyn's parents thought they had a bit of luck when they arrived at the 'Sesame Street Hoopers Store' area just when Abby Cadabby arrived for a photo op. So they waited in front of Abby while the attendants got Abby ready. Well that was not to be, because they were on the right side of Abby and the powers that be formed a line on the left side of Abby. So close but so far away! Aowyn was not having any of that nonsense, she squirmed down from daddy and "bum rushed the stage" as they say. The attendants shushed her away from Abby. She is only two and is being treated like a adult transgressor. Her little heart was broken.

Walking on through the park we came across another water feature area with a giant bucket that dumped water on the people walking under. The cool spray floated out to the crowd below. Tomorrow Aowyn would wear her bathing suit so she would be ready to experience the water rides quickly and easily.

Weary of getting in any more lines and tired of the stroller tangles we headed for the entrance gate. Tomorrow we would go through the Twiddle Bug water area, hopefully with more success. Gathering our thoughts and our exhausted bodies we planned Sunday's activities.

Off we went to our hotel twenty minutes away. On the way we stopped at 'Lees Hoagie House of Newtown' to get some Philly food to take back to our room at the Hampton Inn in Doylestown. We knew Aowyn was too tired to handle a sit down restaurant as she fell asleep in the car anyway. A variety of very delicious hoagies were ordered: Tuna, Shrimp Salad, Grilled Vegetable and a Cheese Steak. The curly fries were fantastic too. The nine inch hoagies were large, quite good and almost too big to finish. Imagine ordering an 18 inch. OMG!

The Hampton Inn was new and the interior design was modern. The bathroom was really nice, and the beds comfy. We awoke to rain...
a lot of rain! They have a self serve breakfast for hotel guests. It was fine for what it is. I am spoiled by Ben's wonderful breakfasts!

Before going back to the park we need to stock up on more Philly foods! Sticky Buns and Soft Pretzels! I had gone online to find something in the Sesame Place area and found two excellent choices. They would close before we got out of the park so we need to make our purchases first. The google had the location of the 'Philly Pretzel Factory' wrong and we drove all around creation trying to locate the building. We even ended up using my daughter's GPS, which took us on a joy ride past my old high school. That was weird.

I happened to jot down a second location in Levittown and we found that store easily. We purchased a dozen pretzels each to take home and freeze. Of course we ate some right away in the car and would take some into the Park for a snack later! Yum!!!! No they are not part of my new food lifestyle, but I told myself I would always allow
an occasional treat, and especially not deny myself some carbo-liscious Philly food when back home. They reheat nicely in the toaster oven and even taste a bit like street vendor pretzels.

Fritz's Bakery is just across the street from Sesame Place, next to the Sheraton. We also noticed a Hoagie deli right next door, which makes this an ideal shopping center if you are visiting Sesame Street. It was pouring rain and the parking lot was a river. The feet got wet! You do not want to miss a trip to this Bakery!!! The place oozes with yummy gooey wonderfulness! They specialize in StickY Buns, so we got a half dozen to take home, as well as a snack box for the car. If I was not pre-diabetic I would have gotten a bunch of their Cinnamon buns that were covered in a pool of whipped cream cheese icing so thick that you could not see the round shape of the buns!

Arriving at Sesame Place we noticed the satellite parking areas were empty as well as nearby parking. We made our way to the VIP area and saw a few cars and people. Is the park closed? We saw people in bathing suits and rain ponchos. The rain was light at this time.
The guys went in to investigate and reported that the park was open and some things are running. Sesame Place gave us the option to use our tickets as credit during this year for another day at the park, since it rained on our day. We decided to go in and see a couple of shows. By the time we got the stroller packed and covered from the rain, it was really coming down hard again. As we entered the park people were coming out saying everything was closed. After much back and forth we decided we had given Sesame Place our best shot, so we cut our losses and headed back home.

Oh, but not before drowning our sorrows in more Philly food! I had mapped out the location of 'Steve Prince of Steaks' on nearby business route 1 in Langhorne. An award winning cheese steak operation very nearby! Whoo hoo! We found them just past the K-mart and guess what was just across the street? The original 'Philly Pretzel Factory' we had been looking for earlier that morning. Now we know this is another good hot spot for Philly food! Our Cheese steaks were excellent! Some of us got em' "wit" cheese. Meaning cheeze whiz and some of us got provolone. My daughter wished it was possible to take home a dozen and freeze them as they were that good! She said she is still thinking about those cheese steaks. Photo above needs some cheese on that delish roll! We will be back someday Steeeeve! Below is a video about the Prince of Steaks.

Looking back on our trip, here are some recommendations for going to Sesame Place: Book your hotel way in advance as all the nearby hotels were booked and unavailable. We saw shuttle vans from
'The Sheraton' and 'The Holiday Inn Express' frequently pull into the VIP parking area. If you stay at those hotels you do not even have to mess or pay for parking. Consider, if you can afford it, to stay in the area the night before, so you are not already exhausted from a very long car trip before you even enter the park. Purchase your two day pass online for Sesame Place as well as the VIP parking for both days. Perhaps it is a good idea to pay extra for the privilege of not having to wait in long ride lines too. Pack a large cooler and eat out in the VIP parking area instead of bothering with the park's overcrowded food area. Try to plan your entrance route to Sesame Place by going around the mall ring from the other direction. You will not be stuck in a long traffic back-up line like on the highway entrance side.

Afterward check out some of the Philly food places I have mentioned in this blog. They were all very good and you do not have to drive to downtown Philly to get your fix. I am so hungry for Philly food after working with the food photos above! I will be good! I will be good.
I will be.... So then I find this video on combining the pretzel and the Cheese Steak at the Philly Pretzel Factory. Can you freakin believe it!!! Okay... I will go eat my avocado and tomatoes now.

Baltimore Magazine just selected "Technicolor Motor Home"
as the 'Best Tribute Band In Baltimore!' How cool is that!!???!!!

The Sweetest Kingdom

I love wonderful surprises! It's a lucky summer day! I happily learned that I won this scrapbooking kit from SussieM! I just love winning things! Originally I thought this would make a great kit for photos
of our second grandchild (that is due to arrive after Thanksgiving).
As I looked through the folders of this kit, I just had to make something now!

Cool In The Lily Pool

A lovely wedding was held at a beautiful old mansion yesterday.
Ben played Classical Guitar during the outdoor evening ceremony.
It was 100 degrees at 6:20 PM. These lilies remained hydrated
and cool... unlike the rest of us wilting flowers. Oh to be a frog.

Jaime Brick's Enchanted Sculpture

We were so excited by these woodland inspired sculptures by Canadian Jaime Brick at Faerie Con that I knew I would have to blog about this imaginative and creative soul! Jaime was kind enough to let me take some photos of his extraordinary artwork. You can certainly tell this man has an understanding of natural beauty mixed with a sense of humor which is apparent in the two distinct styles of his sculpture projects. Check out those silly guys below!

Here is a quote from the Information card I picked up at his booth. " Abandoned as an infant, Jamie Brick was taken in and raised by a pack of wild medieval rabbits. This unusual upbringing reflects in this artist's eyes as he sculpts, stone, wood and mixed media into creatures from a world that lies just left of center."...and...

Long-winded Artist Statement "My work reflects a didactic ascension into a downward spiral, metamorphosing into a translucent solid of good vs evil and my fear of abandonment."

In truth as with most art, the artist does not always know what direction the piece will take him on the creative journey, but you can smile in wonder when everything seems to work together perfectly.

Many of the figures started as life casts, which Jaime has transfigured into very magical beings. How about being the subject of one of Jaime's sculptures yourself? You could be a woodland nymph, as Jaime also does custom commissions in which he can work on a theme along with your budget. He is a member of the International Life Casters association and he promises to provide you with a safe and comfortable experience using the latest materials.
It would be so awesome to own one of his unique one of a kind sculptures and be the inspiration. Be sure to click on the individual photos to view the detail of his beautiful figures and sculptures!

If you should take on the quest of seeking out Jamie's Canadian studio to view his art or become a wondrous sculpture, your journey will lead you along a narrow winding road weaving through the forest of Draper. "The forest is a rough magical landscape. Legend has it that in the middle of the forest is a valley of white skin trees where Faeries still gather in gossamer gowns, their hair wild flower woven. Great wizards still practice ancient lore. At the end of the road near the edge of the map lies Bear Bottom Studio. Here in the forest Jamie lives with his wife Annette in a century old cabin nestled against the Lake of Draper. He invites you to visit the studio and walk through the lake side gardens or to sit by the lake and breath in the serenity."

His work can be seen in the Life Casters Museum In Boston as well as other galleries that are listed on the Jaime Brick website. Jaimie's work ha been featured In Faerie Magazine, and Jaime Brick Studios will return to Faerie Con 2011. If you are traveling to Hunt Valley Maryland check his work out in person! The Inn At Little Washington - Five Stars Combine With Five Diamonds for Dining Heaven On Earth

To celebrate the King and Queens grand and glorious second wedding anniversary, they set out on a three hour drive to one of the best restaurants in the world! 'The Inn At Little Washington' was the destination on a beautiful day filled with blue skies, puffy white clouds and eager anticipation. Traveling through the countryside they enjoyed some of the most beautiful scenery in the royal lands.

I have had 'The Inn At Little Washington' written on my desk blotter for over sixteen years as a dream destination. Since we cannot go away during the popular wedding month of June, due to Ben's Classical Guitar business, we decided on a day trip to someplace special to celebrate our magical union.

Coming off a long busy gig weekend for Ben that began on Thursday night with 'Technicolor Motor Home' playing the 8x10 club, Friday evenings solo acoustic gig, a wedding on Saturday, and Sunday's triple header; Technicolor Motor Home at the Charles Village Festival, playing classical guitar for a wedding at the Cloisters, and then Ben playing solo acoustic at a private party...I think the King of all things guitar needed a mini-vacation.

Making our reservations weeks in advance and checking out all the website photos and information we grew quite excited as the day approached for our dream dinner. Monday was the actual day of our anniversary so happily we were off to our celebration dinner at the famed five star and five diamond, 'The Inn At Little Washington.'

As we traveled over the Piedmont plateau with the gorgeous Blue Ridge mountains as our backdrop each view became more and more like a bucolic landscape painting. Gorgeous hills and valleys undulating with green, yellow and wheat coloring. Our dinner destination is quite near to the enchanting Skyline Drive and the Shenandoah Mountain Ridge. This area is heaven to me...

I connect with this land and I immediately feel a spiritual high...the closeness of the Blue Ridge Mountains...the rolling valleys, green forests, Shenandoah Valley and River. We passed numerous ponds and grazing animals amidst beautiful green hills. I know I should have taken photos, but I think I was too much in awe. (The photo above is one I took from Skyline Drive in 2003) Gazing out the car window natural beauty surrounded us at every turn. Next time I will make a point of stopping to take photos here and there, I promise. "Shenandoah" is one of my favorite words. It is native American and means "daughter of the stars." Just love it! I think this area was perfectly named! It is appropriate that the King and Queen are going to a five star Inn and restaurant in this place of supreme beauty.

We arrived two hours early to the small town of Washington Virginia and walked the streets enjoying the small shops, and the people we met inside. Everyone was very friendly, and we found we had much in common. Such a small world.

After an hour my Hashimoto's hypothyroidism disease along with some other current medical issues told me it was time for my body to relax. Luckily we walked into the Inn just at tea time on the veranda.

O-o-o-la-la.

We sat by the garden and fish pond enjoying delectable treats while sipping the most scrumptious lemonade. A parade of servers came out of the doors carrying iron tea pots and trays of unique cookies. These were served with a trio of blueberry jam, lemon curd, and creme fraiche. I have to say this was the most delicious blueberry sauce I have ever tasted.

So the delight begins....

After resting on the lovely veranda we walked the Inn's grounds and found some gardens and peaceful alcoves. There is attention to detail both inside and outside 'The Inn At Little Washington,' and they want every guest to have a good time while enjoying this trip to a place very different from home.

When we walked back into the Inn we rested in the sumptuous living room and perused through Chef Patrick O'Connell cookbooks. Ben made arrangements to purchase the first cookbook and have it signed for our anniversary. Unfortunately we found out that Chef would not be in till later that evening and we ended up purchasing a pre-signed edition, which is okay too.

We were seated shortly thereafter at our table by a window, which over looked the koi pond garden veranda. There were only four tables in this area, which gave it a very private feeling.

When the appetizer came out I was so excited to try it I forgot to take pictures. You can see it partially in this detail of our table. Four white ceramic spoons had different tiny mounds of perfection placed upon them. The first one I tasted was an unknown something that melted on my palate and and just caused me to say... mmmm... oh mmmm... mmm. Another was the worlds smallest baked potato complete with sour cream and bacon, the next was a pork tenderloin creation, and the last one was a cute little egg called 'green eggs and ham'. We just had to decide between us who got which spoon to try!

Ben had his usual ice tea and I had a fresh and flavorsome strawberry drink. As we dined classical Spanish guitar played on the sound system for ambiance. Our soup course came in a tall clear shot glass with a small ring handle. This contained a cold mint pea soup plated with a cheese cream puff. Unusual combination to have a pea soup with the smell of mint, but wonderful to the taste buds!

From our personalized menu's; my choice for the first course was 'Chilled Maine Lobster with Braised Celery Hearts and Citrus Vinaigrette.' I don't usually get lobster since we live in a blue crab loving area, and I find blue crab is usually sweeter than lobster.
This lobster was so tender and sweet tasting I would always choose lobster if it tasted this good! The veggies were perfectly cooked too.

Ben chose 'A Melange of Spicy Big Eyed Tuna with Avocado, Mango, Crispy Shallots and Sake-Yuzu Sorbet. His first time with raw tuna,
I thought he was very brave. Ben loved it and found the tuna to be surprisingly delicious! He enjoyed the entire combination.

Second course for me was 'A Marriage of Hot and Cold Foie Gras with Sauternes Jelly with Pickled Cherries from their Orchard' I especially loved the Hot Duck liver. Yes, it's true I love liver and this was the best and tenderest I have ever been served.

Ben's second course was this gorgeous 'Macaroni and Cheese with Virginia country Ham and Shaved Black Truffle.' The presentation is amazing!!! I sampled a bit of this dish and that Truffle topping over the noodles was excellent! Ben says this dish was an incredible twist on an old favorite. He found it to be quite yummy and comforting!

My Main Course selection was 'Beef Two Ways: A Pecan Encrusted Barbecued Short Rib Paired with a Miniature Filet Mignon wrapped in Swiss Chard.' When you see photos of plates with small designed portions you think, "How can anyone be full at the end of a dinner with such small portions. Not true. After all I had already eaten,
I decided to eat just half of this melt in your mouth beefy goodness and have it packaged to take home so I could enjoy my upcoming dessert course. I rarely eat beef and usually order salmon when dining out. My intuition told me that in this culinary experience I should go for the Filet Mignon. Even the next day this dish was still delectable.

Ben's Main Course selection was: 'Miniature Filets of Black Cod Saute with Lemon Vodka Sauce and Lilliputian Shrimp Dumplings' I am getting hungry just looking at this photo! Ben says the taste was light and delicate, mixed with great textures, which made this dish a perfect entree. I want some now.

If I were going to the Inn this week my choices would be much different, because I have since changed my diet to a more vegan
and raw food style for health reasons. Luckily "The Inn At Little Washington' also has those food selections on the menu too. Along with creating seasonal dishes from items grown in their own gardens and orchards, 'The Inn" also uses local meats and produce from area farms insuring that everything is totally fresh!

Our Dessert Selections were:

For me: 'A Hot Rhubarb Compote served with Lemon Infused Cake and Rhubarb Ice Cream.' Everything was very good and light, but I fell in love with Ben's dessert choice shown below.

Yes, Ben's 'Cherry Tart' was melt in your mouth magnificent. Oh my! The crispy pastry was incredible! This really is the best dessert I have ever tasted. So you guessed right that I kept stealing bites of Ben's dessert! In remembering this dessert Ben says, "Wow!" This divine taste of heaven made him forget he was getting full. Yum.

At the finale of our dinner our server came to the table and announced, "Here are some gifts for you" and set out before us a plate with a small box shaped like the Inn. Inside were small treats for the ride home. She then placed a white bag with our cookbook in it over the plate and placed the mini Inn on top. A nearby couple was leaving and carried the plate, their bagged cookbook and the cute little Inn shaped box as they walked past our table. I wondered then if the plate was also a "gift" and was going to ask our server upon her return. It was an awesome gift if it was true. When our server arrived back to the table she said, "Come now, the kitchen is ready for you if you still would like to see it." We then quickly got our things together and Ben grabbed the pile of gifts from the table. She showed us to the living room and said someone would meet us here.

A handsome uniformed tall gentlemen greeted us and suggested we leave our things in the living room, so our hands were not full as we went into the kitchen. In a dramatic flourish he then opened two mirrored french doors, and there shining at the end of the hallway was the inner sanctum...the most beautiful kitchen in the world!
How exciting! The sound of monks chanting filled the air. Wow!

This was truly a working cathedral built to honor great food and those culinary artists behind the scenes making their creations. Our guide told us the monk music helps to calm the chefs in what could be a stressful environment. I asked if I was allowed to take a few photos and he said yes. Look at that copper and brass range hood designed to look like King Arthur's tent! The Queen approves! The kitchen itself was inspired by the dairy room in Windsor Castle.

Our host offered to take our photo in this wonderful room exploding with creative vision. I chose not to take any photos of the fireplace area where you pay quite a bit extra beyond the price of dinner to sit at the two chef tables in the kitchen. I did not want to invade the privacy of their guests, so this is a screen shot from the 'The Inn At Little Washingtons' website of that gorgeous area.

I asked about the silver goblets on a nearby buffet and wondered if anyone actually drank from those regal cups. Yes, they are for the guests at the chefs tables. The Queen can imagine herself seated there enjoying some royal treatment and libations!

All this time the monks are chanting just like on the website page. Pretty spectacular atmosphere. It really is the world's most beautiful restaurant kitchen. Notice the cabinet full of culinary awards given to Chef Patrick O'Connell and 'The Inn At Little Washington,' in the background of the photo below.

When we left the kitchen and came back to the living room we chatted with this gentleman about the Inn and other things for a few minutes. He was so friendly and gracious and truly paid attention to the conversation without rushing us at all. He wished us a happy Anniversary before he left. We walked over to our things on a nearby table and noticed the "plate" in question had mysteriously disappeared. I guess we got our answer quietly. We were not trying to take anything, and certainly would have asked at the front desk when we picked up our dinner bags on the way out if this was really a parting gift. I wonder how many other guests make that mistake?

We walked around the rooms downstairs before we strolled outside, and I took a few photos. I should have taken pictures of the restroom area as that was jewel-box of fine decorating as well. There are photos on the wall in the restroom vestibule of the Chef with notable people and one was of the Queen of food Julia Child. The photo above is of "The Monkey Room" which has a small bar.

As this is not too distant a drive from Washington DC, I am sure they get a steady steam of politicos and celebrities having dinner at the Inn. When we left there was a big black tour bus and stretch limo waiting in the parking lot for some other lucky diners that night.

Even though we were only at 'The Inn At Little Washington' for half a day we felt like we had taken a short vacation. A feeling of peace mixed with awe from the entire experience filled us. The drive home was conversation about our memorable Anniversary day.

Meals at the Inn come with a varying prefix price depending on the day of the week. Expensive? Yes. For someone who loves the art of food, it really is worth the price and the drive, to experience one of the best restaurants in the world! We will do this again one day.

Here are some of the Inn's prestigious awards: 'The Inn At Little Washington' was the first establishment to ever receive five stars for both its accommodations and its cuisine, in the Mobil Travel Guide, and enjoyed the same first with the AAA and it's five diamond listing. The Zagat Survey for Washington, D.C., has rated it as number one in all categories for the past 14 years. Travel and Leisure Magazine has ranked the Inn as the number one hotel in the world for food, the number two in the world for service, and the number eight in world and number 2 in North America overall. The Restaurant has been awarded Wine Spectator’s “Grand Award” for the last 12 years. The Inn received “Reader’s Top Table” award in Gourmet’s Restaurant Issue. It has also received five James Beard Foundation awards including those for Best Service, Best Wine List, Restaurant of the Year, Best Chef in the Mid–Atlantic and Chef of the Year. The International Herald Tribune rated it as one of the Top Ten Best Restaurants in the World. The late Craig Claiborne of The New York Times called it "the most magnificent inn I've ever seen, in this country or Europe, where I had the most fantastic meal of my life". The Inn is a member of the Relais and Châteaux hotel group.

The Inn provides luxurious accommodations for spending the night or more. They have rooms, cottages, and two story suites with balconies and garden views. Everything in the Inn has been decorated by Joyce Evans a set designer from England. Many of the furnishings at the Inn were purchased and shipped from England. There are also private spaces for customized opulent events hosting 36-90 people.

We could not at this time afford a night at the Inn, which would have been spectacular...(plus it would mean not having to make the long drive home after dinner...priceless). Yes, certainly it would have been more fun to be relaxing than driving. So if the Inn or even an engaged couple having their wedding at the Inn would like some
Ben Sherman Classical music in trade for a nights stay at the Inn, that would be awesome! Just sayin'...

Our next considerations for a culinary night out are two Maryland restaurants: 'Volt' and 'Linwoods.' Though once you dined at the
magical and royal 'Inn At Little Washington'...this will surely be
"a hard act to follow," as they say in the live music biz.

We've added a gorgeous new video player on the 'Hectic Red' website video page! You can pick your own 'Hectic Red' video selection, or just start with the top video and the rest of the current 'Hectic Red' videos will play in automatic succession. If you would like to listen while you work on the computer this is a nice option. To celebrate, we added two new videos from the vast 'Hectic Red' library! 'Bodhisattva' and 'Angry Young Man,' which are both fan favorites!
Go enjoy the best classic rock musicians in the Mid Atlantic area! Nobody does it better! Next year 'Hectic Red' will be celebrating 25 years together with same four guys! No other classic rock band in the area can make that claim. These guys are tight!

We shortened the audio visual page by adding a different smaller music player. The sound control is now placed inside the amp under the robot. The photos in the slide-show on this page are really fun.
I had an awesome time rocking out cool photo-shop effects while listening to the Hectic Red audio. I hope you take the time to watch the slide-show I put together.

The audio clips are from a live show in Frederick Maryland at Baker Park and the sound is taken directly from the soundboard. I love this soundtrack so much I have my own CD of the concert. You can really hear the quality of Hectic Red's four-part harmonies! Right now I am listening to Hectic Red's clip of 'Don't Fear The Reaper!' Soooo good! Since discovering this tiny music player, we have also decided to add the music player to the Hectic Red Fan page, and the Hectic Red Retro page. More Love Coming This December!

My daughter made the official announcement today! Another baby will be arriving this December! Now I can share the news that Ben and the Queen will be grandparents again! We are celebrating our Mothers Day this weekend together so this is great timing.

My daughter has had a rough first trimester and I hope things ease up on her soon! With this baby she will find out the sex ahead of time so she can plan for everything needed. Our little Aowyn is going to be a big sister. I think she will enjoy giving the baby love! So exciting!

The Famous Spoutwood May Day Fairie Festival

This weekend is the 20th Anniversary of The Annual Spoutwood May Day Fairie Festival. Held in Glen Rock Pennsylvania, always on the first weekend of May, rain or shine, this is the longest running fairy festival in the country. What makes this festival the best, is the beautiful outdoor setting filled with magical places that wee sprite love. Fae folk are nature spirits, and the the obvious place to emulate that love for nature with a fairy festival is in the country.

Spoutwood Farm is an enchanted friendly place to relax, a wonderful place to enjoy people, the perfect place to feel the music, and most of all... a fun place to play!!! No matter what your age, come be a part of the of the annual celebration of the return of Spring! Enjoy the happy parade of colorful fairies, and creative people that fill the fields and walkways on Spoutwood Farm.

There are 70 arts and crafts vendors throughout the festival grounds, along with two areas for food and drink. Music fills the air on a variety of stage locations throughout the weekend. Who will you see? What will you see? Who will you be?

For children, the Spoutwood Fairie Festival is a wonderland at every turn as there is so much to see and do!

Waves of floating bubbles to run through! Run! Fly! Jump! Try to capture one for a fleeting sparkling moment! This area is always shining with delighted little fairy faces!

A beautiful faerie along the woods creates some magic...

Time for some awesome music and tribal beats! There is Albannach performing last year, and wowing the large crowd that always gathers to feel their infectious rhythms! Spoutwood May Day Faire Festival attracts some of the best musical acts! This year the amazing 'Telesma' will be performing on Saturday and Sunday! The 'Gypsy Nomads' now known as 'Frenchy and The Punk' were up on the hill inspiring some free form faerie dancing in 2010.

Children's music is in a hidden realm made for exploring. A few years ago Ben and I ran into Ellis Woodward performing for the little people! Of course Ben joined Ellis for a few spontaneous tunes!

The 'Tribes of Spoutwood' exist for those who would like to express themselves within a like-minded group and enjoy the celebration of light that Spring and Summer bring to the world.

Everyone is welcomed in this colorful glen filled with magic. You can play and express your creative self, while enjoying the beauty of other peoples expressions of light, and artful costume.

Kingdom Rejoices!!! "The Hobbit" Filming Begins!

The King and Queen are hugging with tears of joy!!! It is like coming home!!! We are sending elven love out from our place in the Shire to yours, with this wondrous news that the team of creative geniuses behind the 'Lord Of The Rings Trilogy' are back!

Peter Jackson and the Weta Crew has finally started filming 'The Hobbit.' This will be another beautifully filmed movie in New Zealand with the same incredible attention to detail for everything that was enjoyed by LOTR fans. The amazing artist Alan Lee is back on the
set too! His sense of beauty and understanding of the lyrical line of the Art Nouveau movement makes for some gorgeous scenery. Ahhh The Queen wants to stay in Elrond's home!

Since I discovered "The Hobbit" blog dedicated to the new movie,
I wanted to share these sites with anyone who loved the "Lord Of
The Rings" Triology. Be sure to watch the new Peter Jackson 10 minute video about the start of production of 'The Hobbit' at any of the following web sites! I am still in here...you know... inside your computer......

Isn't that where we all are?

Quite happy here... creating. That is what keeps me going...
the love of creation and seeing what comes through after the spark of an idea. I love playing with all the new things I am learning.

Emo Phillips once said to me..."Crystal I see right through you!" (Brilliant!) I am taking a moment to look out to you, and say that
I have not been posting on this blog because I am inside this mysterious place working on a huge art project. I am redesigning my husbands secret new website. It is like working on 15 pieces of art at once, and there is not much time for anything else. I do not use templates, so all the pages are pieces of art I create digitally just for the website. I have eleven web pages finished, and I am feeling really good about how everything is looking. Then there are the pages I re-do, because new ideas take over during the process...and that is usually a good thing. My wonderful Ben is working on writing the code for the website in between doing taxes. I must say both things cause grumbling and gurgling sounds at times!

Eventually I will come to the photo editing part for the photo gallery page and that will be a large project in itself! Although when I am done I will have more pics for my new Flickr account. Oh I forgot to announce...."Hey! I have a new 'The Painting Queen' Flickr account!"

Anyway just wanted to peek out to Blogville and say hello!
I am hoping to squeeze in a colorful post next week that I had started a few weeks ago. It's magical! Got to go bake up some Cini-buns to keep my sweetie cheerful during tax time! See ya! For realz!

Technicolor Motor Home Inspires Babylon Sisters

There is a new band in town, a 'Steely Dan' Tribute band named 'Technicolor Motor Home' and they are truly amazing! It was due to this new band that I was inspired to create this funky digital collage art piece called 'Oh Those Babylon Sisters!' Constantly for weeks,
I had an earworm in my head singing "Babylon sisters... shake it!" Anyone who knows the song may recognize some of the symbolism from the lyrics in the image. I had a fun time creating this artwork, even though right now the earworm is starting up again singing,
"You got to shake it baby. You got to shake it baby. Shake it!"
Yes, I certainly foresee more song inspired artwork to come!

If you live in the Maryland area 'Technicolor Motor Home' is a must see event! Wowie Zowie! The excitement for this powerful 10 piece band was felt by everyone at their incredible debut performance at the Recher Theater in Towson Maryland Feb 25.

When you listen and watch the video's posted down below of the bands premier performance you will not believe that they only had a few rehearsals, due to snow and ice storms occurring every time a rehearsal was scheduled. 'Technicolor Motor Home' persevered by drawing on the mechanized hum of another world. And now I can have more crazy fun playing with motor home images like the one below! I see a trend happening....

The success of their debut performance is a sign of the supreme musicianship and talent recruited for this band by the perennially barefooted Glenn Workman, who put this project together. Glenn plays keyboards, and sings most of the songs in their repertoire.

Steely Dan music is difficult and challenging to learn, because of the deep jazz influences and constant changes occurring during each song. You really need to know your stuff to do this material correctly. The musicians in 'Technicolor Motor Home' are well known as some of the best in Maryland, and you will see many smiles in the crowd for 'Technicolor Motor Home', as they really do justice to these great songs. As amazing as this band is now, it is going to get even better!

The horn section of the band is powerful and adds a fullness to the sound, recreating the Steely Dan songs as they were meant to be played. During the concert the hard core Steely Dan fans appreciated the sound created by Jim McFalls on Trombone, Dave Makowiecki on Trumpet, and Barry Caudill on Saxophone.

The backup singers Meg Murray and Kelly Butcher provide the authentic details that this music requires.

Mark St. Pierre on drums, and Anthony Setola on bass, play the perfect Steely Dan riffs and rhythms.

Ben Sherman and Bryan Ewald, both incredible guitarists, add the spark to the infamous Steely Dan guitar solos. Along with playing lead guitar Ben Sherman also sings lead vocals on some SD songs.

This is the band to see in Baltimore! Keep an eye on the 'Technicolor Motor Home' schedule for the word is out on this powerhouse band!

The Magical Sparkle Of Fhairy Strands

Yes you read that correct! It's fffffffff-hhhhhairy strands! A play on words for fairy strands. This weekend my daughter and I went for the shimmer and the glimmer of Fairy hair, while attending the Mythic Faire in Maryland. We were familiar with this sparkling look from the Faerie Con gatherings. Some of our favorite Fae peeps such as artist Linda Ravenscroft and musician Samantha Stevenson recommended we get them because they are fun, unique and long lasting. In fact everyone we talked with this weekend loved their strands and said they last for up to four months! So let's go for the fairy light!!!!

Since we were fortunate enough to have the 'Faerie Goddess Mother' herself put them in our hair, we went for the gold! My daughter who has darker hair, chose the copper fairy strands. The strands are actually silk garment threads and come in many colors. Tied to a single strand of hair they add a spark of light that moves through your hair. You can get 10 - 20 fairy strands put in your hair and not look overdone. The effect is beautiful, mysterious and elusive. People turn their heads as they pass you and then a big smile comes across their face as they realize something different is going on with your hair. Yes your hair really does magically sparkle!

It is hard to photograph the elusive strands in your hair, because
they do not sit on top of your hair in stripes. They are woven into the hair, so to create a quick glimpse of shimmer. They move with your hair and add a hint of glimmer! It depends on the light around you how much you shine! Look closely and see if you can find them! My holographic strands are called prismatic gold. Click photos for view.

A few close-up photos of my hair in the mirror to try and show you how these non-chemical highlights work within your hair. A very subtle yet stunning effect. Our men love our shimmering hair!

If you are not fortunate enough to live in the land of the Fae gatherings, you can purchase your own kit online from Faecraft and then have a friend who is good with knots put the Fhairy Strands in your hair. The 'Faerie Goddess Mother' has also invented a special 'Pixie Pick' to help tie that tiny knot. You can view the film below to see how to do the strands yourself. Faecraft also sells beautiful Faerie gloves at Faerie festivals and gatherings. I actually have the pair she has on in this video, as well as a few new yummy ones!

Our grandbaby Aowyn is celebrating her twoness today. She brings so much light and love to our world. Just when you think she can't get any cuter....she does! Now with her adorable tiny voice she says things like, "I know"...."I don't know." She is already 3ft tall, knows all the letters of the alphabet, and her numbers up to twenty.
Aowyn gives more hugs and love than ever, and she has her fairy grandmother and grandpa in the palms of her sweet little hands.

The Google Art Project

Now through mapping technology you can visit museums around the world through The Google Art Project. Google is using it's familiar visual mapping program on the art world and giving us a chance to visit places we may never experience in person. There is also an Art Project You Tube Channel to help you learn how to navigate through the site and the museums. You can choose a favorite painting along your tour and zoom in really close without getting yelled at by a guard. Yes, they yell at me for breathing too close to the paintings! Yes, I do have to get my face all up in it, to check out the old master's painting technique. Just look at that gorgeous painting above! This Art Project lets you make your own art collections as well. So I suggest you take some time one day, or evening, to take your own twinkle-toes, museum hopping around the world!

Learning To Paint On Photos Digitally

I have been seeing a number of photographs that looked as though they were painted, and I went searching for how people would accomplish such a technique. I did not want to use a filter that was a one button push to the end result. I wanted to learn something more than a quickie solution. There were many tutorials just doing a Gaussian blur and hitting multiply. Most people who do a more serious job of painting over photos use a Wacom tablet and Corel Painter. I have neither, so I needed a little information for photoshop and a mouse. Of course when I do have the biggest bad ass Wacom tablet made, along with Corel Painter, I will be doing digital artwork from scratch too. For now it's me and the mouse. I actually tried using a Wacom at Faerie Con a few years ago when a digital artist brought hers along for people to try. What a cool experience. More natural for the artist's flowing hand, than a clunky mouse where the eye hand coordination is not as intuitive.

I found a tutorial by 'Photoshopmama' whom I have watched in the past for learning photoshop skills. Her video "Simulate Acrylic or Oil Portrait' was the main basis for transforming the SOOC photo of my lovely niece you see above, into the image seen just below. It may be hard to see the canvas texture, but I tried to show it in the close-up section of the final painted eye area at the top of this post. You can click on the image below for a larger view of the painted photo.

This video was only 25 minutes long, and you can pause it as you do each step on your own portrait photo. If you know of any other good tutorials on this technique please let me know. This was a good exercise in going over some basic things that I should know anyway. It never hurts to reinforce some basic knowledge and keystrokes to make things go more smoothly in the future. Every little bit helps.

Over The Paper Moon For My Valentine

Just like the old fashioned days of yore, I made a Valentine Card for my sweetie. Since we are both just finally getting over a nasty flu that kept us down for two weeks, I had not been out to buy a store bought card. So I thought a little something handmade by me and photoshop would be nice. Hope you like it my love...

I have to say that I am happily married to the kindest most thoughtful man I have ever met. We are truly soul mates that enjoy every moment together. I feel grateful and blessed everyday to be with my King! Saturday we had an early Valentine celebration at a favorite restaurant with my daughter, her man and our grandaughter. Our little big girl (she is three feet tall haha!) Aowyn, just turned two and the restaurant staff did a little cake, candle, and singing, which put a look of surprise on that baby's face that was totally priceless! We enjoyed sharing our romantic Valentine dinner with family! Spreading the love around! Everyone had suffered this flu bug and we were all so glad to get out from under our sickly cabin fever!

Photo of The Queen is from our wedding and taken by Robert Smith Photography. I had to piece together four different shots to include the entire dress that is hanging down from the moon. I think I faked it out pretty good! The awesome vintage paper moon background was provided by Kpauli on Flickr. Texture used over all was a gorgeous tone from Jerry of Shadowhouse Creations.

The Mentality Of Being An Artist

I have been asked many times to speak or write to college age people who want to pursue creative fields. Usually it is about 'becoming an artist' because that is what I am associated with in my career. What I have to say may not be what they are expecting to hear. I think my sage old wise woman advice really is for anyone, at any age, or stage, in this life. Certainly it comes from my own experience and is coming from the viewpoint of my life circumstances. That being said, it took years to be the person I am now. Most often people need to live through things for themselves to "get it." Still I hope a few thoughtful breadcrumbs will be of help to someone out there. So I've added the page link above under my blog header called 'On Being An Artist' to express my thoughts on that subject. I actually wrote this piece in October 2009 for a Squidoo lens. It has been sitting there unpublished for various reasons. I decided to add it to my blog to celebrate my new dot com status!

Because I have been a creative person in my employment for my entire working life, I have been called "brave." Am I? What I believe about being a creative soul comes from the core of my being. I have always known I wanted to be an artist in some form since I was a child. Period. No doubts.
In high school I was called "lucky," because I already knew exactly what I wanted to study. For me the answer is that "it" was already there before I incarnated. It is Spirit.
It is being who I really am.

You see that digitally altered portrait up there of that little first grader...she was getting these artzy ideas in her head back then. In fact my parents for some strange reason had sent my tiny school photo to a company that hired artists in France to paint real portraits from photos. A very unusual thing for my parents to do. They then shoved the rolled up canvas in a drawer and there it sat for most of my life. Now that was more like my parents. I think their Spirit prompted them to put this painting in my reach, even if in a drawer all bent and cracked. I would as a child pull out the painting and be in amazement at the artist who could paint such reality.
I studied this painting, and I thought it was made by the greatest artist in the world. Yet there was no signature. Around ten years ago I got that painting and put it in a frame to hang near the oil painting I painted of my own young daughter. I thought it was time to give that unknown artist and the child in the painting some respect.

Has this choice to be a full time artist been easy. Heck no. The other people in my life and family made me pay for my choice over and over. Did you hear that? It was other people. Not the choice. Not the art. Whether I was working as a 9-5 corporate art director, or running my own mural business, it was numerous people in my life and their "good opinion" of what "they" thought I should be doing instead of art that caused any problem. There were a few times when
"I allowed" their thoughts into my life...their doubts... about who I really was and what I was doing. Once I took a temp agency job during a slow period to please someone else. They claimed since I did not make a certain income, I was a bad mother.

I always felt you can learn from anything, even if it's a fork in your road. This period taught me basic computer skills which led to my working in the television industry.
I continued doing some faux-finish jobs on the side. I was back being an art director of sorts working on nationally known Television programs in marketing and promotions.
I also made some wonderful life-long friends while in those positions. In a few years I did return to my own mural and faux business full time, and you guessed it...living on my own again with my children. Huge lesson: It's so much better just to say "no" to some people and their "good opinion." Happiness and kindness matter.

So my take is not the usual how to become an artist...it is how to remove the obstacles to being an artist. This comes from someone who fought the good fight of many other peoples opinions about my "job" for thirty years. It always felt better when I was true to myself. You are born with "IT." But do you believe "it"? As a single mom raising two children with all that brings, I was able to do it, with hard work, however difficult financially at times. Only when living with people who did not know who I really was, came the problems for me. When I stayed focused on 'my vision' new doors always opened, and the next job was always there!

The Gypsy Nomads Make Out

Recent news is that "The Gypsy Nomads" have changed their name to 'Frenchy And The Punk'. The two talented and much loved musicians are on the road spreading the magical gypsy punk vibe of their own original song list most of the year! Just look on their facebook page to get updates about what part of the United States they are currently driving!

We first met up with hard working musical couple Samantha and Scott at 'Faerie Con' in Philly. Ben and I strolled into the colorful second floor bar in Philadelphia's famous 'Trocadero' and were immediately captured by the dynamic presence of 'The Gypsy Nomads' as they performed on the old vaudevillian burlesque stage. Wow!

An incredible energetic couple... they sang, danced and played their way into our hearts. We began spreading the word about this gem of a duo that belonged on the main stage of Faerie Con! Truthfully...
I really wanted to 'be' Samantha pounding out those rhythms!

French born Brit Samantha Stephenson and Scott Helland of 'Frenchy and the Punk' have since become one our favorite acts on the festival circuit. The New York duo have created a unique musical style all their own that pulls you into their web of swirling rhythms!

A unique mix of soul stirring tribal percussion, french cabaret singing, multi-layered acoustic guitar riffs, with a lot of Celtic spice, this gypsy flavored theatrical music takes you back in time.

Scott is the only other acoustic guitarist, besides Ben, that I have seen, who is able to use a looping pedal to it's full potential; playing, self recording, and creating on the spot multi-layered sound, making for a powerful richly textured musical experience. Scott also does his fair share of pounding on the drums and singing!

The mystical tribal beats of the 'Gypsy Nomads' percussion vibrate across the crowd. Musically and visually mesmerizing, Samantha and Scott encircle everyone with their rhythms.

Scott and Samantha playfully interact with each other spreading their joy and laughter into the audience. The duo's on-stage chemistry expresses their enthusiasm for their nomadic musical profession. Unable to take your eyes off of them, "Frenchy and the Punk" will charm you with their musical stories and move you to dance.

This kinetic couple is a must see, if you find they are scheduled for a show in your area, go enjoy them live! And for readers of this blog in other countries, "Look Out!" they are headed to Europe in April. Dates are already booked for France and England.

We have enjoyed seeing them on stage in Pennsylvania at the awesome 'Spoutwood Fairy Festival', and every year at 'Faerie Con' and 'Mythic Faire' which are both now held in Maryland. Gypsy Nomads play a long list of creative festival events all across the country.

The Nomads are home for the holidays in New York this month, and the couple is running an auction every day on EBAY to raise funds. They are even going to write a song for someone! You can go to their facebook page to see the activity of that online event in which they post a quirky photo racing the next item to the post office.

If you do get out to a venue to see "Frenchy and the Punk" perform live, visit their merchandise booth where you will find items they have designed with Scott's own intricate graphic artwork. Their t-shirts and guitar shaped sticker designs are really very cool.
When you talk with them you will find these Gypsy Nomads are quite friendly folk, and the kind of warm souls whom when talking with you, are totally in the moment. Truly kind joyful spirits.

There is Ben with Samantha and Scott when we saw them at 'Renn Con/Mythic Faire' last year. We introduced their music to my daughter and she also immediately bought a CD and a guitar sticker at the merch booth. Our little granddaughter Aowyn was happily dancing to the rhythms... yes, we all were twirling in our skirts!
Well not Ben. Twirling in his skirt I mean. Oh what a giveaway!

Quickest Christmas Tree Ever!!! Plus A Magical Fairy Chandelier

So here it is... the easiest tree I have ever decorated for Christmas! Usually it takes two full days and evenings to light and fill my tree with all the meaningful and delicate German glass ornaments I have collected over the years. This year due to the combination of a medical problems that cause fatigue, and a toddler who has hit the terrible twos, I had to create a safe and easy tree. Using floral vines leftover from our wedding wrapped around a pre-lit tree, plastic bubble balls, a bit of sparkling hard rusty ribbon and a few glittery butterflies....Wah-lah! Done in an hour or two and will come apart in minutes! If you need a quick tree fix...this is it. Long floral vines make the process easy and elegant! Plus they can be purchased in many color combination's to suit your decor.

Oh I know... now you want to see that Fairy Chandelier up close...

I made this Chandelier last Christmas because our Mucha Foyer deserved something magical! This year I added the white flowers.

Pulled together from sparkly twigs, an old glittery wreath turned upside down, a beveled glass tree topper and some other sparkly bits n' bobs. This was all attached to wires hooked to those three screws that are on flush mounted ceiling lights. I suppose I could keep adding flowers, twigs, moss and feathers all year long, spicing it up according to the seasons. If I do this I will document it and let you see what becomes of my hanging Faerie world luminary. Yea! I never took apart last years outside front door garland, so I just hung it from the mantle. Now everything looks festive with little effort.

A Chilly Peaceable Kingdom

I see so many of my blogging friends both in this country and around the world have had snow already! It was bitter cold here with winds for four days, but no snow for us. The car is acting up because it does not like the cold at all. Apparently neither does Ben or his Ipod, especially if he leaves it in the car. I am just trying to stay warm and cozy while I create and learn more Photoshop in the Castle studio.

I've been working on all sorts of projects, but I had to do something of our 'Blessed Bink' for the Season. I just love the Samoyed in this page because he looks exactly like my old furry sweet dog Nikki. When my daughter was the Bink's age she had been crawling all over that dog from the time she could move. Nikki just sat there enjoying those moments. We also had Nikki's mom Tanya, who was gorgeous and looked like a beautiful sleek white wolf. She had such wild instincts for feeding her pups that it was amazing to observe what animal she would attempt to bring into the house as food.

This mini peaceable kingdom digital scrapbook page reminds me of my Christmas dogs of yore, and their happy smiling faces. I just loved those furry beings. Hope you are starting to get the warm and fuzzies this Season of Peace. I really think I need to bake some cookies...mmmmmmmm

The Ego Has No Heart

Let us set the stage and serve up the star of the show... The Ego.

I have observed that when people are living through the ego false-self, the wants of the 'me' outweigh their ability to take "others" into any consideration. It simply does not occur to them,
as they are not living heart sourced. The ego becomes defensive
and self righteous about it's actions and behaviors. When the ego-false-self steps on a person's heart they sadly do not realize they step on their own heart as well. To them there is the more important serious immediate business of feeding their raging ego.

This is my first attempt at creating the modern Zetti style digital collage. Way back in the 70's I did crazy collages made from magazine parts of people. Pasting new eyes and mouths on faces to make some really odd characters. Do you remember how much fun it was to take a pencil eraser to a big 'Life' magazine ad and make rays come from someone's eyes? I also loved making Rebus letters with found pictures and cut out magazine words to send to friends.

In the 80's I used to make photostats and xerox copies from the Dover vintage catalogs we had at the publications I worked for back then. Using the old fashion waxer I placed the sticky cut outs on paper, copied it again and hand colored my wacky announcements and party invitations. I even designed a stage set for a local music television show employing these techniques on a larger scale. So this kind of 'play' has always been fun for me over the years! Now with the wonderful world of digital art it makes everything you create in this art form so richly textured, colorful and coherent. I really am enjoying these little mini-paintings of quirkiness. There are a few more ideas "formin' in me head" of how to use this popular journaling art form to express some recent encounters...

Trey Ratcliff's View From Hobbiton

We found these wonderful photos taken by HDR photographer Trey Ratcliff of Tolkien's visible world as it looks now. Look closely...there is the party tree just outside the door of Bilbo's Hobbit Hole! Below is a closer look of the tree stretching out in all it's majesty and glory!

We were thrilled Trey came to our world and took such inspiring photos just to share the beauty of these lands! The Hobbits told us that Trey Ratcliff is an excitable generous soul who happily shares his photos and knowledge of HDR techniques on his Flicker pages and website 'Stuck In Customs.' You can certainly see by these images why his website is the number one travel photography blog.

Pink Dreams

I won a digital scrap booking kit called 'Pink Dream's' recently on Mary Pop's blog! Lucky me! So last night I decided to play. Since I had this recent sweet photo of Aowyn just waking up in her fairy costume at Faerie Con, I thought it would make a good dream image. Eventually as this digital creation came into being I also used Mary Pop's 'Little Angel' for some pieces. I made the tips of our fairy's shoes from part of a wooden bird in 'Pink Dreams'.

Every time Mary Pop designs a new kit I really want to have it,
as she does lovely work. Her creative team is great and shows beautiful examples of what can be created. Although I want my pages to look like many I see on her blog... they still come out looking like I did them, because they turn into fairytale fantasy scenes. That's me and my muse for ya! Now I just cannot decide which version I prefer, the one above, or the one I did below. Maybe you could tell me with a comment which one you like!

Stove-top Mural Painting

It occurred to me tonight that I like to encourage people to paint on their walls, because I have not been allowed to express this part of my creativity at home... as I rent. All the years I painted for other people and came up with cool decor ideas... I could never do the same for myself. So if you own your walls I say my mantra to you..."do it! It is so easy! It is just paint! If you change your mind, just paint over the paint!" I am showing an example of the type of small area you could paint yourself. This is the area over your cook-top in the kitchen. If yours is covered in tlle or other non-paintable material, perhaps you have desk or nook area along your counter top you can use instead. You supply the willingness and some artistic ability. Mine are done with Benjamin Moore latex house paint and latex glazing liquid. Yes it is just house paint!

When I would meet with my clients I always made a point to talk about the things they loved. This gives you a feel for their personal taste and passions. So if you are not sure what to paint just think about the things, places, or objects you enjoy. The owners of this kitchen loved to cook, drink wine and share these things with friends. Now that I think about it, they always had a glass a wine and a great meal for me too! A rather big glass served with laughter!

In love with Tuscany and some fine Italian restaurants, the clients wanted their space to reflect the feeling of cozy old world dining.
I wanted them to look out over the Tuscan hills from a wide rough stucco window alcove. The view I painted was from a vacation photo they supplied. You cannot get that with wallpaper. After creating a trompe-l'oeil ledge, I then painted their favorite cookbooks and herbs. I used brushes and cheesecloth to build up the layers of transparent paint glazes so the walls became old burnished stucco. Then a layer of thin satin finish poly over the finished wall mural above the cooktop to make cleaning up cooking stains easy. Now isn't that window better than a blank wall while you boil that pasta?

This next cook-top alcove actually was made of stucco! The client wanted his view of Brandywine Falls painted right onto that real stucco. Yikes! That is a tricky bit of painting! I would recommend a simpler piece of art than this realistic landscape painting if you have stucco. Since I have painted a man standing on a ladder right onto painted cinder block, and then had people ask him questions...
I figured I could handle this one. I took lots of photos of the view outside of this modern home with the serene view and chose the one with a composition that fit the shape. I used a furry stucco roller to lay down some primer as you can see in the 'before photo' below.

Now check out the view over in the dining room. That is the river! Amazing! Okay back to work. Be sure to cover the area with plastic and tape out your edges where needed. Prep is so very important. The primer smoothed the wall a little, although the stucco texture was still going to be part of the equation. So I made the rough surface work for me. As you can see in the detail below, rocks and rough texture go together very well. Dry brush over your rock base colors and then slowly build up your shapes. Don't forget to step back from your work every now and then, and check out the big picture too. For the smooth area of the water, I really had to scrub the paint into every porous crevice so you would not see the texture. You can really rip up your brushes this way! Be prepared to buy more brushes.

The shape of the stucco alcove in this kitchen determined the shape of the mural. I am sure once the other contractors set the surrounding tumbled marble tiles and granite molding into the wall the finished river painting looked both soothing and very dramatic.

You can also paint outlets to match your mural if they are in the area you wish to paint. Prepare first with a light sanding and a good primer and then paint to disguise them. If the outlets or switches are used heavily then leave the hexagon plug, or square push button unpainted, and paint the surrounding cover plate only.

Let's walk into the living room while we are here... Wow! That is one great view. The river is just feet away! I bet the fall leaves are looking fantastic through those windows right now!

For our next cooktop area mural we are painting a trompe-l'oeil alcove with a still life inside. You can create anything you like in an alcove, the client asked for this vase and floral arrangement.

This entire kitchen is painted in a five shade glazed old world finish. The centerpiece painting under the range hood had to be in keeping with the cabinets and the overall french country feel of this room. The satin poly does not reflect the hood lights which is what I prefer. I recommend only one or two thin coats of poly. Unfortunately the flash of my old camera did reflect off the poly at the time of this photo. Still you can see that this still life and the monochromatic color scheme is a different look from the other cook-top murals.

For our final mini-mural in this post here is a very simple little effect done by painting meadow flowers, small birds, nests and butterflies on a plain creamy yellow wall. You cannot see the other vignettes in this photo, so just imagine the other birds and butterflies scattered along the wall above the counter-tops, and perched on the outlets in this kitchen. This would be the easiest solution for you, as you are only painting small little objects, on an already plain painted surface.

This kitchen was actually painted in semi-gloss paint. I found it a bit too sticky to work with, so on all my future murals I switched to eggshell finish. Clients usually always wanted a washable wall. Eggshell is tough, but all modern latex finishes hold up if you use good paint! It's that awful builders paint that washes off or peals off under painters tape. Yuk! I like Benjamin Moore Paints because you can stand your paint stick up in them, and it stays there. It has a very thick consistency! The Benjamin Moore Latex glazes and my basket of acrylic tubes mixed just fine with the house paint.

Many of my followers like to do collage work. Why not create a decoupaged piece of art for behind your cook top. You could do it on a framed piece of Masonite or on canvas so it is removable. So think about what you love, start saving some tear sheets for inspiration, and express yourself... you fortunate home owners!
